New Clinic Open!

Hello and Happy New Year to you all! It sure was a wild 2016 so I hope you got to enjoy some time off over holiday season to recharge the batteries for 2017.
The clinic I have worked in for 12 of the last 14 years has been sold so I have moved. As of MONDAY JANUARY 16TH 2017 I will be working in a clinic at 251 Oxford St BONDI JUNCTION. It’s about 3 minutes walk from my old clinic so shouldn’t be too big a disruption. I am up …

Can sugar increase inflammation levels?

In this first article of a series on how sugar impacts your health, I’m going to start by looking at the role a high sugar diet plays in inflammation. I first developed an interest in this link when patients would mention in passing that they had noticed an improvement in their pain levels after doing a sugar detox. They were doing the sugar detox for other reasons, but found this added benefit occurred as well.
After hearing this a bunch of times, I started looking into it, and it didn’t take …

NYTimes article on “useless” surgery

The New York Times posted a really interesting article this week (click here if you want to read it), about the effectiveness (or otherwise), of common surgical procedures. We kind of assume that a doctor won’t recommend surgery for us unless we really need it, and unless it’s going to fix us. After all, there are significant risks and costs involved in surgery, so there must be compelling reasons for them to recommend it, right? Turns out that may not be the case.
As they noted, surgery is not regulated in the …

How many of us have Disc Herniations?

As an Osteopath I see a lot of people with disc injuries. People are understandably concerned about doing damage to their discs, as they play an important role in the structural integrity of the spine, and live very close to nerves and the spinal cord, so they can cause a lot of pain and other problems.
There have been a number of studies where researchers take members of the general population and perform scans on them. they are trying to find out how many people actually have a particular injury. For …

Should you rest or stay active with low back pain?

Pictured is the Astronaut Position, which is a great way to relieve back pain. In this post I’m going to discuss the results of a study which has found that when you suffer a back injury you are better off staying active than resting.
Now, it may not seem terribly important, I mean, how bad could a couple of days on the couch be? Well, here are the stats: “more than three quarters of individuals will have a recurrence of their symptoms within a year from the initial onset, and up …

Perspectives in Sports Medicine Seminar

As you would all no doubt be aware (seeing as I have’t stopped talking about it for the last month or two) I spoke at a seminar in Tasmania last week. After a lot of hard work it went really well. It was a great experience and I learnt a lot, and really enjoyed teaming up with one of my oldest friends, Physiotherapist Toby Watson from North Curl Curl Physiotherapy (previously Brisbane Lions and Tour De France). We had fantastic feedback and have been asked to do a few more …

Salmon & Watermelon Thai Style Salad

The only thing I ever used to do with Watermelon was cut a hole in the top and pour as much vodka as I could inside. Then I found this recipe. Seeing as I was effectively living in a sauna, I probably ate this once or twice a week – it’s light, fresh, easy to make, and delicious. It’s a great way to cook the salmon and means you cook it perfectly each time, and the dressing for the salad (Green Chilli Nahm Prik) can go on any dish you …

Coming back to Sydney!

Hello,
I’m very excited to tell you that I will be returning to Sydney in early 2013. My girlfriend has scored an amazing job back in Sydney so I’ll be shutting the doors of my Singapore clinic and moving back to Bondi Junction. There’s no place like home!
Hopefully the picture of that castle in Germany has remained intact. Keep checking in for updates on starting times and when you can start making appointments. Hope you all have a great holiday period and I look forward to seeing you all in the …

Latest Headlines

I had to come up with something to replace that ridiculous Tiramisu story, here are some of the stories I’ve been reading online (in the medical/health genre):
Headline: “Exercise can treat cardiovascular disease as well as prevent it”
Story: A number of studies have recently found that as well as being good for preventing the possible onset of heart disease, people who have coronary artery disease can reduce the risk of having a heart attack, and/or the severity of their heart disease.
One author concluded: “”I would be happy if I could convince …
