The Sandwich Competition

9 November 2009 3 Comments

Hi,

Anyone who has been to see me in the last few months has probably heard about the sandwich competition I was holding. It started off as the Sydney Sandwich Competition, but then I accepted an entry from Cronulla, so it became the National Sandwich Championships. As the weeks went by, I decided to open it even further, and so it evolved to become The Australasian Sandwich Classic, or ASC. The ASC was held last weekend, and it was a roaring success.

My mate Ryan was meant to bring 3 live mud crabs on leashes to exercise them prior to cooking, but he had to move house that weekend, and this threw the comp wide open. There were chicken sandwiches, BLT’s, marshmallow sandwiches, steak, taco type things, my meatball slider, but the win went to Bobby’s ice cream sambo – cinnamon and brown sugar wafers hugging a scoop of baileys ice cream.

Thanks to everyone who gave tips and advice, sadly my experimental duck confit sandwich did not materialise, but a good day was had by all, now I just need to un-tag a bunch of photos on facebook, buy a new couch, and get the carpet replaced.

Scorecard:

Dave’s phenomenally gourmet chicken sandwich – 12

Tara’s Twice cooked pork and coleslaw roll – 13

Gaddy’s BLT with confit cherry tomatoes in homemade basil oil – 12

Jocko’s mum’s chicken sandwich that apparently knocks the socks off the old ducks at the bowling club – 16

Annabel’s Nutella and Marshmallow thing – 6

Macca’s sausage sanger – 4 (a great score, considering he didn’t end up cooking it, I still have the snags in my freezer)

Somer’s Steak Sandwich with caramelised onion and beetroot chutney – 21

My Meatball Slider – 14 (terrible score considering I rigged the votes)

Amanda’s vegemite and scrambled eggs crumpet sandwich – 8

Toby’s Mexicano Fiesta Burrito – 21

Bobby’s Cinnamon and Brown Sugar wafer with Homemade Bailey’s Ice Cream Sandwich – 28

This was the inspiration for the meatballs in my meatball sub. It’s gold.

    Great Party CJ,

But, I’ve now figured out your cunning plan. Make me dance so much I have to book an appointment with you the following week.

At the next party I will be sure to sit very still as I consume your free cocktails.

    You won’t fool me twice.

    Andrew

    Hey Andrew,

Sorry to hear about the injury mate. I don’t think it was a matter of you dancing “too much” per se, I think anyone would’ve hurt their elbow if they crowd surfed their way into a wall the way you did.

    Hope it’s healing up well.

    Chris
