Back to School Part 1 – Back Pain in Students

17 January 2018 No Comment

I’m going to write a series of articles about common issues your children might face at school this year. Hopefully having this information at the start of the year will set them up with good habits now and prevent problems that tend to build up over the course of the year.

The first thing I want to bring to your attention are the most common causes of back pain in children. According to a 2011 study, there are 3 things that affect kids the most:

  1. A heavy schoolbag (weighing more than 10% of body weight),
  2. Furniture design that does not suit human body dimensions, and
  3. Incorrect sitting posture on the part of the children themselves.

Another really important factor is the LENGTH OF TIME spent sitting. Even with a great posture and a fantastic chair/desk setup, if you sit for too long you start to slump.

So my NUMBER ONE TIP in this regard is to take regular breaks. Stand up, move around, shrug your shoulders up and down, stretch in a doorway – anything that gets you up and moving for a minute or two.
