Following on from my last post which compared the safety of visiting a Chiropractor vs visiting a GP, I will not attempt to summarise the findings of the other study cited in the New Scientist article. If you just want the bullet points, Richard Brown wrote ( http://bit.ly/unO7B) that the conclusion of this study was that the authors “found no causative association between chiropractic manipulation and stroke.”
Let’s go through what they did find.
In this study they looked at the outcome of treatment for nearly 20,000 patients, and found that in …

What I’m going to look at in this posting relates to how quickly one should start addressing a complaint of low back pain. Historically, people suffering from low back pain have been told to rest, sometimes for very long periods. It’s time to right this wrong.
I have treated plenty of people who 20 years ago were given a neck collar for a minor car crash and wore it for 3 months despite no evidence of any tissue damage, “just because that was what they did back then”. And plenty of …

I pity the fool that volunteered for this study. 153 healthy, that’s right, HEALTHY, men and women VOLUNTEERED, if you can believe it, to be given the virus that develops into the common cold. Prior to being given the virus, their sleep habits were measured for 14 nights, both in terms of their sleep duration and their “sleep efficiency” (the percentage of time in bed that they were actually asleep).
“Sleep …

In this study the authors measured the Vitamin D levels in people suffering chronic pain to see if it may be a contributing factor. Vitamin D does play a role in pain perception and neuromuscular functioning, and so dysfunctions related to Vitamin D levels may present as abnormal (in this case elevated) pain states.
The researchers measured the Vitamin D levels in 267 people and compared it with other parameters “such as the amount and duration of narcotic pain medication used, self-reported levels of pain, emotional distress, physical functioning, health perception”.

Surely noone will ever spell that wrong…. Apparently my eternal benevolence knows no bounds. I’ve decided to start a new website called www.thegoodhealthjournal.com. This is a site where I will attempt to summarise and explain articles on current developments in medical science.
I wanted to do this for a couple of reasons. The general population rarely get access to these articles – they are generally only seen by professionals. And even if you did see them, you might not understand everything that is written in them. It’s not because they are so indescribably clever, it’s …
