Treatment – What does seeing an Osteopath involve?

On your first visit, I will take a medical history, asking about the specific complaint for which you have presented, but also about any other injuries you may have had, your occupation, exercise, diet, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your injury and the best way to go about treating the problem.

A physical examination will be performed, including a spinal examination and analysis of the function of the nervous system. These tests are important for establishing the cause and severity of your injury, and whether an osteopath is the best person to treat you.

I want to help you get rid of your problem as soon as possible so at the start I’ll see you a couple of times to help restore pain-free function and get your body to a position where it can start to heal itself. When you get to a good level I’ll put you onto some stretches and exercises to help you gain further improvement and to try to prevent relapses and when that’s going well, I’ll reassess you to check all the things that led to this happening aren’t still there and that the exercises are still working properly for your particular problem.

Some people have minor problems and may only need to come once or twice, others have long-term issues and require more treatment. Often people like to return periodically so they can prevent problems recurring as lifestyle or occupational factors that cause their problems change. It’s really up to the individual.
